The then Federal German government intervened successfully to prevent the film being shown at the Cannes Film Festival on the grounds that the festival’s regulations prevented any film being shown that would cause offense to any participating nation. Ironically, the director of the Berlin Film Festival lobbied hard for the film to be shown at his festival.

After graduating from UCLA, he had a WGA internship with the writing staff of “The X Files” (1993). While there, he asked executive producer Frank Spotnitz if he could audition for a guest acting role on the show. Spotnitz “honestly didn’t expect for a second that Jared was going to get the part, because it’s a huge part and he had never even seen him act.” But Poe beat out around 30 other auditioners to play FBI Cadet Rudolph Hayes in the episode “Release” (# 9.17), which first aired May 5, 2002.

Jared Poe - Biography

(One of the later great X-Files episodes, mainly because of Poe’s wonderful acting. He also plays a small role in Firefly.)

Alice Sycamore: You ought to hear Grandpa on that subject. You know he says most people nowadays are run by fear. Fear of what they eat, fear of what they drink, fear of their jobs, their future, fear of their health. They’re scared to save money, and they’re scared to spend it. You know what his pet aversion is? The people who commercialize on fear, you know they scare you to death so they can sell you something you don’t need.

Grandpa: Penny, why don’t you write a play about Ism-Mania?
Penny: Ism-Mania?
Grandpa: Yeah, sure, you know, Communism, Faschism, Voodoo-ism, everybody’s got an -ism these days.
Penny: Oh [laughs] I thought it was some kind of itch or something.
Grandpa: Well, it’s just as catching. When things go a little bad nowadays, you go out, get yourself an -ism and you’re in business.
